LIBRARY MEDIA PROGRAM
A school library media specialist serves each school’s students, teachers and administrators in teaching and learning. Each school library media center houses a collection of books and learning materials designed to support the curriculum and recreational needs of students. In addition, each library media center provides internet access to a variety of instructional resources outside the local collection.
The District library media program is in the process of updating their K-5 instructional program to align with the recently approved state library media frameworks. The new curriculum will be expanded to serve grades K-12. The goal of the program is to help all students become better readers, writers, listeners, information retrievers, and information users.
All elementary and middle school library media centers facilitate the implementation of the Accelerated Reader Program adopted by the District to improve literacy scores. Levels of implementation vary from school to school dependent upon local funding.
LIBRARIES ON LINE
Annually the District library media centers circulate in excess of one million items. Access is provided to students, staff, parents, and other patrons via the District’s web-based On-Line Public Access Catalog (OPAC). A link to Libraries On-Line and Kids On-Line can be found on the District’s web site.
Online research databases are available for students and staff through a grant administered by the Arkansas State Library. Passwords are available from each school library media specialist. AETN provides teachers access to an instructional video database provided by United Streaming.
The DMC calendar is maintained on the District’s web site (www.pcssd.org) under the link “Our Schools’ Calendars.”
